Intent
At Clarendon Junior School we believe that Physical Education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is vital towards the contribution of a pupil’s physical and emotional development, health and wellbeing. The Physical Education curriculum allows all pupils to apply skills, knowledge and concepts, to experiment, to be creative and imaginative and to recognise and celebrate progression and achievement. We encourage all pupils to participate in Physical Education, to develop an understanding and to lead an active and healthy lifestyle that can be maintained throughout their lives. Physical Education builds positive relationships between groups and individuals while providing challenge and stimulation through physical activity. Physical Education provides opportunities for pupils to gain lifelong skills in communication, leadership, sportsmanship, health and hygiene.
Implementation
Pupils at Clarendon Junior School participate in high quality PE and sporting activities. The long term plan incorporates a range of different activities that allow children to develop confidence and recognition of their own and others ability. All children receive a minimum of two hours PE a week. Throughout the year, and their time at Clarendon Junior School, children have the opportunity to learn and develop specific skills around the different units of the PE curriculum. Opportunities for extracurricular activities are provided for the children and inter and intra schools’ competitions are carried out through the different year groups.
The children in years 4 and 5 participate in swimming lessons at the local leisure centre as well as learning certain life-saving skills whilst in the water.
As a school, we promote healthy lifestyles and eating through our PE lessons and links with PSHE. Children are given the opportunity to recognise and understand why we stretch before lessons and maintain exercise.
Impact
By using this approach, the children will:
• have access to the full PE curriculum regardless of gender, race or cultural background.
• develop knowledge of safety and an appreciation of the principles of safe practice through correct handling of PE equipment and a commitment to ensuring safe and effective exercise procedures.
• lead a healthy lifestyle, achieved by eating sensibly and exercising regularly.
• stay physically active for sustained periods of time and understand the importance of this.
• demonstrate a keen interest in PE and a willingness to participate eagerly in every lesson.
• be able to swim at least 25 metres by the end of Year 6 and have a knowledge of how to remain safe in and around water.
The impact of our PE provision is assessed through termly pupil voice, termly assessments, lesson observations and performance within local competitions.
